According to FM, this 75,000 + $250 signup bonus offer ends on April 13. That puts the total value of this welcome offer at $1,000+, so if you’re interested, act fast. The additional $250 is a travel credit, and it must be booked through Capital One Travel; flights and hotels are eligible, and there appear to be no restrictions.

I’d suggest avoiding a direct application. Run pre-approve first to test your approval odds at no cost, and don’t apply outright if you can avoid it, otherwise you may waste HP. The $500,000 income trick may also work, so it’s worth giving it a try.

This $250 credit has a one-year validity and expires on the account anniversary. You can use it in one transaction or split it across multiple transactions. There are no restrictions for airfares, hotels, or entertainment; it seems to apply to purchases made through this channel.

Eligible Venture primary account holders will receive a one-time $250 Capital One Travel credit (“Credit") to use toward purchases made through Capital One Travel. The Credit will expire after the first year of account opening, on the account open date anniversary. The Credit will be available within Capital One Travel and can be applied to purchases at checkout. The Credit may be used in whole for a single purchase or in part over multiple purchases. Rewards will not be earned on the Credit. If the purchase using the Credit is canceled, the Credit will be restored if it is not expired. An expired Credit will not be restored upon cancellation of the purchase by the customer. A Venture card account must be open and in good standing to receive or use the Credit.

Also worth noting: if you have received a Venture or Venture X bonus in the last 48 months, you may not be eligible for this card. That’s what the terms state, though it’s unknown how strictly it is enforced in practice.

You are not eligible for this product if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.

Capital One Venture Rewards Card Overview

Capital One Venture Credit Card

2x miles on all purchases!

  • Rewards: 2x on all purchases
  • Redemption: 100 miles = $1 toward travel purchases; 1:1 transfer to airline miles
  • Annual fee: $95
  • Apply now>>

Benefits

  • 2x points on all purchases: If you like using one card for most spending, this is still a strong 2% cash-back equivalent across the board.
  • Easy point redemption: For travel purchases, points can be redeemed directly as a travel offset. The ratio is $1 = 100 points, so 50,000 points = $500. For other spending, the rate is 0.5 cents per point.
  • Global Entry and TSA Pre $100 credit: Using this card for these fees automatically earns reimbursement.
  • Plaza Premium Lounge: Two free visits per year.
  • Metal card: Approved applications receive a metal card.

Drawbacks

  • No additional bonus categories.

In recent years, Capital One has made a number of changes to its rewards program. Their points can now be transferred to airline miles and hotel points. This effectively puts them into the transferable-points ecosystem, and point flexibility has improved significantly.

Capital One Points Overview

  • Point Value: Average value is 1.2c/p, so 100 points = $1.2 (Point Values & Analysis)
  • Redeem Directly: Redeem at 1c/p toward travel purchases or various gift cards; cash out directly at 0.5c/p
  • Transfer Partners: Transfer 1:1 to Air Canada miles (good for US-China flights and infant tickets), British Airways (short nonstop flights, Avianca miles (good for US-China business class, ANA and Asiana US-China first class, and no YQ on award tickets), Qantas Airways miles (good for domestic US nonstop flights and flights from the US East Coast to Western Europe), TAP Portugal Miles&Go, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, Flying Blue, Club Premier, Asia Miles, Etihad Guest, Finnair Plus, Wyndham, and Choice. Transfer times range from instant to several days.
  • Points Feature: You can pool all of your Capital One points into one account and use them together.
  • My Take: Capital One has fewer transfer partners, so compared with some other programs it is a bit less flexible and valuable. The more useful partners are AC and Avianca. Redeeming points for travel at 1c/p is also a solid option, and you can still earn miles, which makes it much easier than transferring points for award tickets.

My Thoughts

The signup bonus on this card is solid. Plus, it includes TSA Pre and Global Entry reimbursement benefits. For a $95 annual fee card, that’s still quite generous. But over the long run, the base 2x earning on all spending can make offsetting the $95 annual fee harder.

Capital One Credit Card Application Guide

  • Application status can only be checked by phone: (800) 903-9177
  • Capital One applications usually pull reports from all three credit bureaus. You may be able to avoid a hard pull by freezing some of your credit reports.
  • You can apply for only one Capital One credit card every six months, including both personal and business cards. If you force another application, it will likely be instantly denied, but it will not result in a hard pull.
  • One person can hold at most two Capital One personal credit cards at the same time, counting only Capital One-issued cards.
  • If you do not qualify for the card you applied for, you may be automatically approved for a different card instead, usually a lower-tier version. You can choose to accept or decline it, and there will be no additional hard pull.
  • New applicants may be asked to upload ID during the application process.
